Music: "Transylvanian Waltz"
download
I’m making this piece available mainly as an example of my earlier stuff, dating back to 1997 and thus predating OC ReMix by a good two years. Clearly, I didn’t expend a lot of effort naming it, and I suppose it’s neither particularly Transylvanian nor particularly waltzy. I did spend time writing it, however, and amongst my earlier pieces it stands out as having some more interesting harmonies and even (gasp) a tempo change ending! We all start somewhere - truth be told I was making "music" probably one to two years prior to writing this, but it was amazingly bad and I fortunately have no recordings leftover from that dark era to haunt me or provide fodder for would-be character assassins or paparazzi… At any rate, sample quality here is the best I could muster within my Ensoniq ASR-10’s (at the time) hefty 4MB of RAM (which nowadays wouldn’t hold a singe note of most piano gigasamples); there’s some Elfmanish aspects, and I think it serves as a decent example of where I was at & what I was doing circa 1997.
As an amusing sidenote, I actually dedicated this piece to (again, at the time) the girl of my dreams. In retrospect, older now and perhaps somewhat wiser, it doesn’t really strike me as the kind of composition a dame would consider flattering, per se. To compound the pain, I placed it back to back with Yohko Kanno’s amazing solo cello piece from Macross Plus. There was some confusion on said dream girl’s part, and initially she was astounded, maybe even enamored, as she thought I had written the Kanno piece. For the record, I "did the right thing" and corrected her on the spot, and didn’t try to take credit for Kanno’s work.
Man, was I dumb. Live and learn… or at the very least, live.
